Turas - New Yarn Vibes artisan variegated yarn launched

Our newest and brightest range of artisan yarn has been designed and dyed for us by Fiona Waters of Green Elephant Yarn. All of the shades in this collection are named after towns in Ireland with each shade endeavoring to encapsulate the feeling and vibe unique to that place.

Color

Fiona has a great feeling for, and understanding of color and how different shades work together. She takes much of her inspiration from nature - colors and patterns she sees as she goes about her day. She takes inspiration from the beach in particular with greens and blues being her favorite shades to work with. These colors are featured prominently in two shades in this range - Waterford and Killarney.

Although Fiona takes her inspiration from nature she adores bright neon shades - the brighter, the better! Cork and Clifden are fantastic examples of this love of bright colors! One of our favorite thing she said to us was 'bright colors make my heart sing!'.

Fiona does not usually plan her colors in advance. She is a believer in allowing the colors to develop naturally through experimentation with different shade combinations.

Process

Fiona is a busy mum to her small children so has to juggle dyeing with a busy family life! She works from a busy home workshop. Her studio is filled to the brim with imagination, color, ideas and of course - lots and lots of wool!

There are many stages to her dyeing process which means the steps can be broken down and worked into her busy schedule. She tends to leave her wool blanks to soak overnight in preparation for the dyeing process in the morning. The next day Fiona adds the dye and then uses heat to set the dye. She then cools the wool, rinses it and allows it to drip dry as the 100% Irish wool, which comes from Galway sheep, is quite delicate. Once it is dry it is ready to go!

Fiona's children love that her home is full to the brim with color and wool. She hopes that when they are a little older they will be just as eager to help and be involved as they are now!

Fiona, and all the team here at Yarn Vibes, always find it very exciting to see how a new shade will knit up! Each hank, and often each stitch, is completely unique. As Fiona herself says, 'Hand-dyed yarn is completely dynamic and has a magical quality. I feel I have created a great colorway when I want to keep and knit it myself.'
